Looking After Your Collection

Now that you’re starting to grow an art collection, there are a few things to consider. Putting in place good habits and processes around these things will mean you collection is properly looked after for years to come, and you will be able to realise the value of your works if you ever wish to sell.

  • Insurance: Make sure you consider this artwork in your home and contents insurance.

  • Care: Make sure the artwork is not hung near smoke, steam, or water! If it does get dirty or damaged, you should ask the gallery or artist how to clean the work, before having a go yourself.

  • Documentation: Make sure you keep the artwork documentation (including Certificate of Authenticity, and any other documents including catalogues etc from the exhibition) for your records.

  • Valuation: As time goes on, and the artist’s reputation grows, as does your collection – you may wish to have the work valued again, so that you understand the current value and can update your records and insurances accordingly.
